Although no meets have been definitely arranged, it is certain that there will be several for both Freshman and informal University cross-country teams. For the latter, the management is arranging races with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the Naval Radio School, and a team from the Naval Reserves in Boston. For the 1921 team, meets are being planned with Andover, Providence Technical High School, Wakefield High School, and Worcester Academy. A meet with the Yale Freshman team is desired but whether or not it can be arranged is uncertain. Exact dates for these meets will not be decided upon for a few days at least. War conditions have made it impossible for the long-distance men to get into shape as early this year as formerly, and no meets can be held until the men are ready for them.
In an interview with a CRIMSON reporter yesterday, Coach Farrell said, "It is now practically certain that there will be cross-country meets for the Freshmen with Andover, Providence Technical High School, Wakefield High School, and Worcester Academy. I hope that one can also be arranged with the Yale Freshmen. This will give the 1921 team a schedule that compares very favorably with those of former years.
"I wish I could comment as favorably on the cross-country material. Too much cannot be made of our need of more material, especially from the Class of 1921. At present, there are some twenty Freshmen out. There ought to be at least fifty. The Freshman cross-country team is the foundation of the Freshman track team, and the Freshman track team is the basis of future University teams. With the present scanty material, the outlook is not bright for a University team next year.
Men ought not to stay away because they think that they are not strong enough for cross-country work. We can judge whether a man is fit or not, and if he is not. we can probably develop him so that he will be."
The harriers put in a very strenuous afternoon yesterday, when special attention was paid to speed. The work began with five moderately fast laps, and one lap at almost full speed around the Stadium track. A two-mile walk and some sprints followed, and after two more laps around the Stadium track the afternoon's work-out ended.
