Both the University and Freshman tennis teams overwhelmed their Yale opponents Saturday afternoon, the University players winning the intercollegiate championship by beating the hitherto unfeated Elis by a score of 7 to 2 and 1919 men disposing of the Yale yearlings by a score of 9 to 0.
In the University match at New Haven Captain R. N. Williams, 2d, '16 played the best tennis and defeated Captain Weber, of Yale, in straight sets with his fast net game and powerful back court drives. In the doubles, however, Williams's superiority was not sufficient to decide the contest, Weber and Stoddard defeating the University captain and J. S. Pfaffmann '17. Stoddard of Yale won the only other match for his team from G. C. Caner '17.
The scores follows: Singles.--R. N. Williams, 2d, '16 defeated Weber, 6-2, 6-3; Stoddard defeated G. C. Caner '17, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3; W. Rand, 3d, '17 defeated Hopkins, 4-6, 6-2, 6-2; J. S. Pfaffmann '17 defeated Ball, 1-6, 7-5, 6-2; H. G. M. Kelleher '18 defeated Seligson, 7-9, 6-2, 6-4; W. D. D. Morgan '18 defeated Kelley, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4. Doubles.--Doty and Peabody
defeated Hopkins and Ball, 6-2, 3-6, 10-3; Weber and Stoddard defeated Williams and Pfaffmann, 6-8, 6-2, 6-1; Caner and Rand defeated Kelley and Seligson, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2.
The Freshmen had little trouble with the Yale 1919 players on Divinity Field, only two of the matches going to three sets. The scores follow: Singles.--R. C. Rand defeated Garland, 6-3, 6-3; R. H. Kissell defeated Hopkins, 6-2, 6-1; F. S. Ritchie defeated Augur, 6-8, 6-4, 6-3; C. J. Coulter defeated Achelis, 6-0, 6-3; F. M. Warburg defeated Hammerslough, 7-5, 6-2; F. W. Hatch defeated Porter, 6-3, 1-6, 6-3. Doubles.--Rand and Kissell defeated Garland and Hopkins, 8-6, 6-4; Ritchie and Coulter defeated Augur and Hammerslough, 9-7, 7-5; Garrison and Stevenson defeated Achelis and Porter, 6-4, 6-3
