FIELDING CANDIDATES REPORT

Spring Practice for University Nine Will Start in Baseball Cage This Afternoon at 2.45.

Fielding candidates for the University baseball team will report to Coach Fred W. Mitchell in the Cage this afternoon at 2.45 o'clock. The work will be a continuation of fall practice, but absence from the work last autumn will not count against anyone. Freshman fielders will not be called out until the outdoor field is sufficiently dry for practice. Battery candidates will report for their regular work-out at 2.00.

With the return of seven "H" men, all of whom were regulars on last year's team, the outlook for the season is very promising. In the infield, every position will be taken by a veteran except for third base, which is left vacant by the graduation of H. R. Hardwick '15. Prospects in the outfield, however, are less bright, as there are only two regular outfielders left in college, F. P. Coolidge '16 and F. G. Fripp '16. The other regulars were lost by graduation last June.

Battery practice indoors is now well under way with 26 men reporting regularly. This squad includes nineteen pitchers and seven catchers. The new coach, formerly of the Boston Braves, Fred W. Mitchell, is giving the battery candidates a large amount of time and general supervision.

The first game of the season comes on April 10, when the University nine meets the Boston Red Sox, Coach Mitchell's old enemies, at Fenway Park. Thereafter, games will follow one upon another in close succession; so that although the first contest is only played for practice, the University must nevertheless be fully rounded into shape by that time for the ensuing season.
