ALL MAY HAVE TO JOIN UNION

Owing to the very unsatisfactory relation of the Union to the student body, the Student Council has appointed a committee to investigate and report on the advisability of submitting to the vote of the classes in college a plan of compulsory membership in the Union. The committee has reason to believe that in the event of a satisfactory vote from the classes, the corporation would look with favor upon the plan. The difficulty of the situation arises from the fact that the Union is now supported by voluntary membership, but is used to a greater or less extent by everyone. In short, its support is that of a private club, while it is put to public use. This, obviously, is a great injustice to those who bear the burden of support, and it has become necessary to change this state of affairs. It has been suggested, therefore, that the Union be made an undergraduate institution by reducing the fee from $10 to $8 or $6 per annum and placing this item upon the term bill, in the same way as the Stillman Infirmary fee. A few free memberships are to be given, however, for the benefit of needy men. It should be distinctly understood that the power to make this change rests entirely with the corporation. The committee has reason to believe, nevertheless, that if the classes, by a vote, should indicate that they desired this done, the corporation would consider the measure favorably.

In order that all sides may be presented, the committee has decided to hold three public meetings in the assembly room of the Union to which all men interested, both members and non-members, are cordially invited. The dates for these are: March 7, 8 and 10 at 3.30 o'clock. The committee sincerely hopes that all who are interested and who have anything to say will come.
