ACTIVITY AND SUCCESS OF FALL ROWING SEASON MARKED

The fall rowing season which has just ended has been one of the most successful ever held both from the standpoint of interest shown by the undergraduates and from that of uniformly good weather throughout the season. A very large number of candidates reported for both the University and Freshman crews and continued to row daily until the fall regatta during the last week of October virtually put an end to all but individual rowing.

The Freshman candidates were called out the day after the opening of College and reported to Coach Haines. The men were divided into ranked dormitory crews which practised daily till the regatta. The candidates from 1920 numbered 95, including coxswains.

Practice for the University crews was started the following Monday, October 2, with the record number of 108 candidates reporting. Four University crews were picked and the rest of the men were divided into club crews. Coach Haines then took charge of the University eights, and Coach Brown was put in charge of the Thayer and Eliot Club crews. B. Hanwood '15, H. L. F. Kreger '16 and A. Beane '11 coached the Standish, Gore and Smith crews respectively.

The annual fall regatta was held in the last week of October, and consisted of three days of races between the various ranked crews. Standish Hall won the Slocum Cup by defeating Gore and Smith in all three of the races between the first, second and third crews. In the three years of competition each dormitory has won the trophy once. The Eliot Club cntinued in possession of the Filley Cup by defeating the first Thayer crew by two lengths, although the Thayer second and third crews both won their races. Finally University crew A defeated B, and D defeated C on the final day of the regatta.

The squads were then cut to two University and two Freshman eights which continued rowing for over two weeks.

Shortly after the end of the regatta the comp and wherry races were held on the half-mile course up the river. C. L. Poor, Jr., '18 and F. T. Fisher '19 were the winners of these two races respectively. The last event of the season was the race for single shells for the Regent's Cup. This was won for the second time by N. P. Darling '17, who, with J. C. White, 2d, 17, also won the double sculls race.
