The University Press announces, as its list of fall publications, 20 volumes of particular interest to the student and general readers. Of special interest to members of the University is "The Harvard Volunteers in Europe," a book of personal records of experience in the present war, edited by Mark Antony de Wolfe '87, editor of the Alumni Bulletin.
Two volumes of addresses by the Honorable Elihu Root are among these fall publications of the Press. "Addresses on Government and Citizenship" is a masterly exposition of the principles of the Constitution and the government established by it. "Addresses on Military Organization and Colonial Policy" deals with the problems which may be regarded as the consequence or aftermath of the Spanish-American War. Both volumes are edited by Robert Bacon '94 and James Brown Scott '90.
"Essays in the Earlier History of American Corporations," by J. S. Davis '08, is a valuable addition to the Harvard economic studies. "A Selected Bibliography of Slavic Europe in the Western European Languages, Comprising History, Languages and Literatures," by Robert J. Kerner '12G, assistant professor of history in the University of Missouri, is a comprehensive work on non-Slavic languages.
New Book by Professor Francke.
Professor Kuno Francke's "Personality in German Literature Before Luther" contains six lectures delivered in the winter of 1915 at the Lowell Institute and subsequently at Cornell University and the University of California. "An Approach to Business Problems," by A. W. Shaw, lecturer on Business Policy in the Business School, deals with the problems in production, distribution and administration which confront the business manager.
"The Composition and Date of Acts," by Professor C. C. Torrey, of Yale University, is a recent addition to the Harvard Theological Studies. "Giotto and Some of His Followers" is a profusely illustrated critical consideration of Giotto's paintings by Professor Oswald Siren, of the University of Stockholm.
"The Spiritual Interpretation of History," by Dr. Shailer Matthews, dean of the Divinity School, University of Chicago, contains the William Belden Noble lectures, which were delivered at the University in 1916. Professor C. H. Moore's "The Religious Thought of the Greeks from Homer to the Triumph of Christianity" deals primarily with the genetic development of the higher phases of religion and discusses ancient morality, Roman religion, Oriental cults and early Christianity. Another addition to the Harvard Theological Studies is "The Pauline Idea of Faith in its Relation to Jewish and Hellenistic," by Professor W. H. P. Hatch '98, of the General Theological Seminary.
Volume XXVIII of the Harvard Studies in Classical Philologoy is included in the list of publications announced by the Press. "Aristotle: Meteorology," by Francis H. Fobes '04, assistant professor of Greek in Union College, is a carefully worked out edition, based on the oldest sources.
Professor W. E. Byerly's "Calculus of Variations" is the first of a proposed series of small volumes dealing with mathematical subjects of special interest to physicists. "Genetics and Eugenics," by Professor W. E. Castle '93, is a textbook for students of biology and a work of reference for animal and plant breeders. "The Order of Nature" is a thesis by L. J. Henderson '98, assistant professor of Biological Chemistry in the University, which seeks to reconcile scientific conclusion with the results of philosophic thought. A. B. Lamb, Ph.D. '03, Assistant Professor of Chemistry and Director of the University Chemical Laboratory, publishes a "Laboratory Manual of General Chemistry," in which the object of and practical value of each experiment is emphasized.
"State Sanitation: a Review of the Work of the Massachusetts State Board of Health," in two volumes, by Professor George C. Whipple, should be of value to all American engineers and health officers. Two volumes of the Harvard Health Talks are among these publications: "Adenoids and Tonsils," by Professor Algernon Coolidge '81, of the Medical School; and "An Adequate Diet," by P. G. Stiles, Assistant Professor of Physiology in the University.
The University Press is also publishing a new edition of the "Official Guide to Harvard University.
