The trial of Herbert B. Harris and Arthur K. Reading on the charge of signing a false certificate in connection with the assessment, to become a voter, of W. Townsend '16 commenced yesterday. Former Attorney General Herbert Parker, senior counsel for the defendants, moved to quash the indictment, contending that its allegations were not sufficient to establish a crime. Judge Raymond overruled Mr. Parker's motion, and after counsel had waived the reading of the indictment, Harris pleaded not guilty. No witnesses were called, but the cases were continued until tomorrow morning.
Assisting Mr. Parker, for the defendants, are Representative William E. Weeks and John W. and P. F. McAnarney; and for the Government the attorneys, besides Mr. Corcoran, are John E. Quinn and F. P. O'Donnell of the district attorney's staff.
