FIRST DEFEAT FOR TENNIS TEAM

University Players Lost to Cornell, Winning Only Three Matches.

The University tennis team met its first defeat of the season at the hands of the Cornell players at Ithaca on Saturday afternoon. Captain R. N. Williams, 2d, 6 and W. W. Mansfield '15 were the only University players to win in the singles, and Williams with G. C. Caner '17 won a doubles match, so that the final score was 6 to 3 in favor of the Ithacans.

The summary follows:

Singles.--Captain R. N. Williams, 2d, '16 defeated Captain C. O. Benton (C), 6-2, 6-4; S. T. Hunter (C.) defeated G. C. Caner '17, 7-5, 7-5; W. Blair (C.) defeated W. Rand, 3d, '17, 8-6, 6-2; C. O. Thompson (C.) defeated L. Curtis, 2d, '16, 11-9, 6-2; W. W. Mansfield '15 defeated L. K. Callahan (C.), 6-1, 6-3; T. T. Cooke (C.) defeated J. S. Brown, Jr., '17, 6-4, 8-6.

Doubles.--Williams and Caner defeated Benton and Blair, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3; Hunter and Thompson defeated Rand and Curtis, 6-4, 6-0; Callahan and Cooke defeated Mansfield and Brown, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4.
