FIRST CREW WON SHORT RACE

CLASS CREW CAPTAINS ELECTED.--SINGLE SCULL RACE WITH YALE.

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

A short race between the first and second University crews took place yesterday. The first crew won by about half a length. Pair-oar work for these crews will begin today and continue daily, lasting from 10 to 12.30 o'clock. The University training table will start on Monday with breakfast. Hereafter the crew will use the Sim's boat which was used in the race against Yale last year.

The captains for the class crews were elected yesterday as follows: Senior crew, E. Reynolds, Jr., '15; Junior crew, R. C. Curtis '16; Sophomore crew, J. C. White 2d, '17.

Improvement in the Class Crews.

During the past week great improvement has been shown in the class crews, due partly to several shifts. Lothrop, who has been stroking the Senior crew, will be unable to continue rowing, and his place at stroke has been filled by A. Fisher. In the Junior crew, J. E. Graham has been rowing No. 6 in place of J. A. Jeffiries, who has been laid up with blood-poisoning for over a week. It is expected that Jeffries will be back in the boat by Tuesday or Wednesday of this week.

The preliminary trials of the class crews will be held on May 6. The orders of these crews follow:

Senior crew--Stroke, Fisher; 7, Schroeder; 6, Reynolds; 5, Parkman; 4, Hill- iard; 3, Bassett; 2, Graham; bow, Hoyt; cox., Peoples.

Junior crew.--Stroke, Wilson; 7, Curtis; 6, Jeffries; 5, Foster; 4, Buffum; 3, French; 2, Gifford; bow, Whitmarsh; cox., Packard.

Sophomore crew.--Stroke, White; 7, Potter; 6, Culbert; 5, Coolidge; 4, Ingalls; 3, Webber; 2, Philips; bow, N. Darling; cox., Henderson. Substitutes: R. Baldwin, Baylies, Derbyshire, Fell, Felton, Flickinger, Graham, Hutchins, Lovell, Swann, Wallace, and Whittemore.

Single Sculling With Yale.

In the single sculling race against Yale the University will be represented by two men. The race will be one mile in length and will take place prior to the class crew race against Yale in the Charles River Basin on May 15. Candidates for single sculling should report at Weld boathouse to Dr. Paul Withington, Wednesday at 4.30 o'clock. Members of the University and class crews will not at present be allowed to compete for this event
