MORE ON PHI BETA KAPPA.

Mr. McMahon in his communication implies that the CRIMSON in Saturday's editorial stated that the extra ten were elected to phi Beta Kappa on a basis of character and all-round ability. As a matter of fact, the editorial said that the Society was "generally understood" to exercise a right of selection on such basis not only in choosing the extra ten, but in the first thirty. Emphasis was laid on the variance which exists between "general understanding" and the facts.

We accept the proviso that opportunity should be left for the election of men to the Society on the basis of final honors, for these are, as well as marks, definite indications of scholarship. For the rest, however, we hold that only cases of dishonesty should prevent the choice of men in order of their standing.
