FRESHMAN GYM. CLASS FORMED

Following the precedent established in 1909, a class in general athletics for Freshmen who are not candidates for any of the various 1918 teams will be run again this year. The class is intended primarily to give an opportunity for exercise and development to men who are not out for any one organized team. It therefore aims to give general physical training rather than proficiency in any particular branch of sport. There is no expense attached to membership in the class, and the very best of coaching is afforded the members. Fairly regular attendance is the only requirement.

The men will be divided into squads of ten each, according to physical qualifications. No Freshman is barred from joining the class, but non-athletes will naturally derive the greatest benefit from participation in the general work.

Dr. P. Withington '09 will again have direct supervision over all work, and C. F. Damon '15 will assist him in the management of the class. It is intended to have each squad meet on an average of three times a week about 4 o'clock in the Hemenway Gymnasium.

Competent Men in Charge.

Coach Mann of the University swimming team will take charge of the swimming instructions; Coach Anderson, ex-world's champion middle-weight wrestler, will coach the wrestling squad; Mr. Leslabay will take charge of the fencing; Coach Foley of the boxing, and P. Withington '09 will direct the work of the general gymnastic squad. Work in this division will include running, jumping, vaulting, and tumbling. It will be arranged so that a man may enter all of these divisions.

In previous years the class has not been formed until after Christmas, but that custom will not be followed this season. A meeting of the Freshmen who intend to join this class will be held in the Trophy Room of the Union Wednesday afternoon, December 9, at 4 o'clock. Dr. P. Withington '09 and C. F. Damon '15 will further outline the plans and the men will be divided into squads according to height and weight.
