For the third time this year a Harvard team won an intercollegiate championship when the University hockey team scored a 3 to 2 victory over Yale in the St. Nicholas rink, New York, last night. After the game the two teams chose their captains for next year. A. F. Sortwell '14, of Wiscasset, Mc., being selected to lead the University players, and W. Beron '14S, being Yale's choice.
The Scoring.
Yale drew first blood when Ordway scored the only goal of the first half on a pretty bit of combination play. There was, however, very little team-work in evidence during the evening, and the game soon resolved itself into a shinny match, with scrimmages around the goals. Harvard had somewhat the better of the argument, making numerous desperate assaults on Yale's cage, and it was only the excellent defensive playing on the part of Shiller that kept the score down to three.
It was not until the second half that the individual efforts of the University players were of any avail, and then, with but five minutes to play Phillips rushed the puck from the centre of the rink down to the Yale cage and tied the score. Within three minutes the same player and Sortwell put Harvard in the lead by tallying a goal each. Yale was fighting hard, however, and just before the whistle Harmon scored from a scrimmage, making the final score 3 to 2.
This second period was most exciting and a comparison of the ability of the two teams may be had from the summary, which shows 33 stops for Shiller and 18 for Gardner. Practically all these shots were the results of individual playing, which could not show the University team as its best, as it has been carefully trained in the advantages of team-play and gives a much better exhibition of hockey when the men can work in combination.
The University team deserves great credit for its uphill fight, for it must be remembered that Yale was leading up to the last five minutes of the game, and it was only a firm determination to win on the part of the Harvard men that secured a victory.
