CREW GIVEN SHORT SPURTS

SHIFT MADE IN FRESHMAN FOUR-OAR. UNIVERSITY EIGHT CHANGES SHELL.

Harvard Training Quarters, Red Top, New London, Conn., June 12, 1912.

The work of the University eight this afternoon consisted of short stretches at a high stroke. After crossing the river to get out of the high westerly wind that was blowing, Coach Wray sent the two eights down to the three mile mark in half mile stretches. The University crew went well most of the time running out excellently between the strokes.

Another change was made in the Freshman four today, Weatherhead going from stroke to 2, changing with Lothrop. This boat will have to show considerable improvement before the Yale race.

The University eight changed boats today, the Bacon shell in which the last two Yale races were rowed, being tried instead of the Iris III used in the triangular race. This change will probably be permanent.
