our college papers conducting straw ballots. So far as can be ascertained, the Universities of Chicago, Pennsylvania, Illinois, Minnesota, Michigan, Cornell, and Yale have conducted such ballots. At Pennsylvania, the voting was merely between Mr. Taft and Colonel Roosevelt, but at the other universities, Democratic candidates were also included in the voting.
At the seven universities, the order of preference, as shown by the total vote, is Roosevelt, Wilson, Taft, La Follette, and Debs. Roosevelt has a lead of 886 over Wilson, or over half as many votes as Wilson received. With the exception of Michigan and Yale, every college gave most of its votes to Roosevelt. Wilson was Michigan's favorite, and Taft was Yale's. Cornell contributed most heavily to Roosevelt's total, giving him 766 votes.
