The University hockey team had little trouble in defeating Dartmouth in the Arena last evening by a score of 7 to 3. The game was ragged, however, and showed none of the earmarks of real hockey. Harvard was almost, without any team-work that was effective and Dartmouth, though the men kept their positions, was too slow in following the puck. Only once in the first half did Dartmouth pass the University defence, and that was when Wells made an unexpected rush which netted a goal. The University men were individually fast and got the puck out of the corners well, but their passing was uncertain and shooting very inaccurate. They so far outskated Dartmouth, however, that at times it seemed that the game was waiting for the Green to catch up. Huntington was close on the puck no matter where it was and prevented many attempts to get within striking distance of the University goal.
In the second half, the University team started off with a goal after 12 seconds of play. There was still lack of team-play which individual speed and alertness made up for. The entire second team was substituted toward the end of the half but did not have time to get together. The most sensational play was made by Blackall, who took the puck from behind his goal and caged it unassisted after a brilliant dash.
Dartmouth showed a marked tendency to loaf offside, though no penalties were inflicted for this offence. At goal Gardner played his usual cool, game and made several excellent stops. On the whole the University men were very fast, but did not keep together.
The summary:
Score--Harvard 7, Dartmouth 3. Goals--Sortwell 3, Blackall, Baldwin, Duncan, Huntington, Delinger, Fahey, Wells. Umpires--Bray and Heron. Goal umpires--Southard and Carlton. Time--Two 20-minute halves.
