The Prospect Union on Central Square at which the teachers are all students, graduates and instructors in the University is an educational and social club for men, managed by wage earners. Its object is to extend to working-men opportunities for elementary, technical, commercial, and higher education through evening classes and lectures, and to bring into mutually helpful contact working-men, students and teachers. It rests on a non-sectarian, non-partisan basis, being open to any man over seventeen years of age regardless of his nationality, creed, or station in life.

Evening School Courses.

This year courses in the evening school of which some sixty will be offered, open on October 7. They will as far as possible cover every grade of work--primary, intermediate, grammar, and in some cases, college--and are designed to meet the needs of all kinds of men. Especially will the newcomer to this country who wishes to learn English, the mechanic or clerk who wishes to improve his knowledge of his business, and the young man, who wishes to continue high school work, though he has no opportunity to attend high school will be provided for.

The school is organized in several departments with an educational director and departmental chairman at the head of each, and a staff of instructors under him. These instructors are chosen from among members of the University, largely Law School men for their especial fitness for their work. As a rule men are secured who teach in the evening, school a subject they are working on in the daytime.

There are two terms in the school through which the term of service of instructors lasts: the first, of ten weeks closing at Christmas; and the second, of fifteen weeks closing about the time of the April Recess. The evening classes come at 7.30 and 8.30 o'clock one night a week. In addition a number of afternoon courses are generally given, and it is planned to do this this year. They will be started, however, somewhat later on in the fall.

Instruction Practically Free.

All courses are conducted free of cost to the student, who is a member of the Union, except those where some special materials are required, in which cases the cost of such materials is charged. In all the courses books are given out from the library on a small deposit, which is refunded when the book is returned in good order. Membership in the Union which admits to all the privileges is $2 a year. Beside the instruction, membership includes privileges of the library and swimming pool, and many chances to participate in athletic work. Sunday afternoon lectures are also given for the benefit of the men.
