FRESHMEN DEFEAT ST. MARK'S

Mahan's Kicking and Forward Passing Featured Saturday's-Contest at Southboro.

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

The 1916 football team defeated St. Mark's last Saturday in a well-played game at Southboro; the score was 12 to 0. Gilman and Morgan played exceptionally well on defence, while McKinlock proved the most consistent ground gainer.

Freshman Line Still Weak.

On the offence, the Harvard line showed lack of strength; no substantial gains were made on straight plunging, and both touchdowns came as the result of forward passes. St. Mark's, however, had an unusually heavy team, which explains, in a measure, the failure of the Freshmen at the rushing game. On the defence, the work was much better, as the line held well; St. Mark's only long gains were made on trick plays.

Freshman Used Forward Pass.

During the early part of the game, the play was largely in the Freshman territory, but at no time was the goal seriously threatened.

The first forward pass, perfectly executed, was one of about eight yards over centre to Watson, who carried the ball 15 yards further to St. Mark's 2-yard line. Here the latter held firmly for two downs, until McKinlock was finally rushed through right guard for the necessary distance. The second pass, which also resulted in a score, was from Mahan to Felton; Mahan was almost blocked from throwing by two opponents, and Felton made a spectacular catch, scoring before he was tackled.

In kicking, Mahan excelled his opponents, often outdistancing the ends. Gilman failed at two trails for goals.
