In the practice for the University football team yesterday afternoon several important changes were made, Minot going in at left guard in place of Huntington, who was tried at centre with P. D. Smith. McKay was at his old position, left tackle, for the first time this season and will probably continue there. Felton was moved out from tackle to end. This arrangement of the centre men gives the line an increase of both speed and weight, as was evident in the 30-minute scrimmage with the second team, which followed the usual punting and signal practice.
With Minot, McKay, and P. D. Smith in the University line, the second team kicked off. Minot received the ball on the 25-yard line and ran it back for 50 yards before he was downed. Then the University backs advanced the ball without much difficulty for a touchdown. In the remaining time two more touchdowns were scored, Campbell, who took Corbett's place, being especially effective at circling both the second team's ends. The latter, in comparison with Lewis and Smith, the University ends, were slow in getting down under punts. Consequently the University backs got free for long gains through a broken field. On the defence the University team was practically invincible, the second team backs gaining first down but twice in the entire scrimmage. The new combination on the left of the line seems the strongest yet used this season.
P. H. Keays, a substitute on the 1913 team and No. 5 in the 1913 crew last season, appeared on the field for the first time today.
The teams lined up as follows: Freshman Squad Numbered 86. The Freshman football squad was given only the lightest kind of work yesterday. The afternoon was spent in passing-practice for the centres and quarterbacks, tackling the dummy, and falling on the ball. Men with punting ability were also tried out. Many new candidates have reported during the last two days; the squad is now comprised of 86 men.
