LIGHT PRACTICE FOR CREWS

Good Work Shown by University and Freshman Eights in Short Rows.

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

Harvard Crew Quarters, Red Top, Conn., June 9, 1908.--All the crews here had comparatively light work today on account of the high wind that kept the water rough. In the morning both eights and the four-oared crews crossed the river and rowed slowly over the first mile of the course, keeping close under the lee of the opposite bank. Coach Wray followed the crews in his single scull.

In the afternoon the work was a little longer. The University eight appeared on the river at 6 o'clock and went down to the Navy Yard and back in short stretches, a distance of about four miles. The rate of stroke was kept as low as 26 all the way, and considerable attention was paid to blade work in the rough water. The shell spaced well and as a whole the crew rowed in good form.

The Freshman eight went about three miles, but were forced to stop at the boathouse in the midst of their practice to remedy a defect in Hooper's rowlock. The University four-oar also covered about three miles. Coach Wray gave this crew considerable attention and succeeded in improving their manner of following the stroke. The boat showed considerable improvement over previous performances. When the Freshman four-oar went out this afternoon Reece was tried at bow instead of Oveson. It has not been decided whether or not this change will be permanent. Manager K. Howes '08 arrived this afternoon, also R. F. Herrick '90 and Harold Bullard '03.

The orders of the crews follow:

University eight--Stroke, Sargent; 7, Richardson; 6, Bacon; 5, Waid; 4, Lunt; 3, Severance; 2, Fish; bow, Faulkner; cox., Blagden.

University four-oar--Stroke, Cutler; 3, Withington; 2, Morgan; bow, Ellis; cox., King.

Freshman eight--Stroke, Cutler; 7, Hooper; 6, Eaton; 5, Withington; 4, Waite; 3, Whitney; 2, Forster; bow, Shillito; cox., Fales.

Freshman four-oar--Stroke, Richardson; 3, Jowett; 2, Smith; bow, Reece; cox., Coach Gill.
