At the eight annual Henley Regatta of the American Rowing Association held Saturday on the Schuylkill River, Philadelphia, the second University crew won both races in which it rowed: the Stewards' Challenge Cup race for first eight-oared shells and the New England Challenge Cup race for junior collegiate eights. Both races were rowed over the regular Henley course of one mile and 550 yards. In the New England Challenge Cup race, Harvard finished a length and a half ahead of Pennsylvania and Columbia in 7 minutes, 9 1-5 seconds, the latter two crews tying for second place. The second University crew won the Stewards' Challenge Cup race in 6 minutes, 52 1-4 seconds, defeating Georgetown by three-quarters of a length. The Wanderers, a mixed Philadelphia crew, came in third.
In the first race, for the New England Challenge Cup, Harvard got the better of the start and remained in the lead during the entire race. Columbia and Pennsylvania were unable to row as high a stroke as the second University crew and even when the latter lowered the stroke to 35 at the middle of the course, it continued to gain on the other two boats. At the last half-mile, Harvard was three-quarters of a length and a half. It was a dead heat between Columbia and Pennsylvania for second place. The crew rowed fairly well in this first race but showed a tendency to finish weak. There was slight head wind which accounted for the time being slower in this race than in the second one.
The crew rowed in very good form in the second race. Harvard got the better of the start, but for the first third of the course, Georgetown was almost even with the second University crew. The Wanderers fell steadily behind. At the half distance, Harvard was leading by a few feet and though the crew lowered the stroke from 38 to 36, it gained steadily and finished about three-quarters of a length ahead.
The order of the crew for both races was as follows: stroke, Forster; 7, Metcalf; 6, Strong; 5, Hooper; 4, Smith; 3, Loring; 2, Waite; bow, Wiggins; cox., Voorhees.
