Plans of Speakers' Club Announced

The entertainment committee of the Speakers' Club has arranged an interesting program of meetings for the rest of the year. As it is the object of the club to give its members opportunity for practice in all forms of oratory, the program embraces the various forms of public speaking and platform address; and all afford an opportunity for hearing recitations by the best available public readers. To these regular meetings of the club members of the University are cordially invited. Men desiring to acquaint themselves with the nature of the club before requesting admission to membership are especially urged to attend.

The club will hold its annual dinner at the Lombardy Inn, Boston, next Wednesday evening. The speakers will be Professor I. L. Winter '86, of the Department of Public Speaking, E. E. Hunt '10, T. M. Gregory '10, W. R. Ohler '10, H. M. Potter '10, and F. W. Sullivan '10. R. H. Smith '10 will act as toastmaster. Various members of the club will speak informally.

The club has elected the following officers for the coming term: president, H. M. Potter '10; vice-president, R. H. Smith '10; secretary, F. C. Alexander '10; treasurer, D. W. Teachout 1G; chairman of the executive committee, H. Brightman '11.

List of Entertainments by Club.

The first entertainment will be a reading by Mr. George Riddle '74, in the New Lecture Hall, on March 16. Mr. Riddle, formerly instructor in elocution at Harvard, has for many years been recognized as one of the foremost public speakers in the country. His program for this reading will be made up of selections from standard literature, both humorous and dramatic. The reading will be open to all members of the University. A mock jury trial will be held on March 30. Four attorneys, a judge, a jury of six men, and witnesses will be appointed from the club. The meeting is designed to give practice in work of a legal nature. On April 12 a prize competition in extemporaneous speaking will be held. The speakers will be assigned subjects shortly before they are called upon and will be required to develop their topic in a five-minute speech. All the topics will be on related subjects, and first and second prizes will be given to the best speakers. On April 23, prepared speeches on subjects chosen by the speakers will be given. Detailed plans have not yet, however, been perfected.
