Fordham was defeated by the University baseball team yesterday afternoon by the score of 7 to 2. The most promising feature of the game was the timely batting of the University team. Hartford's pitching was somewhat steadier than in the Georgetown game. He struck out eleven men and allowed but four hits. Mahoney on the other hand was hit freely at critical moments. Most of the errors were due to poor throwing.
For the first time this year the regular infield played together. There was not much chance for team play, but individually the men played well. MacLaughlin has only two chances, both of which he handled easily. Simons showed his usual speed in getting the ball to first. Currier again led at the bat with three hits out of four time up. MacLaughlin followed him with two out of three, one of them a three-bagger.
Harvard started the scoring in the first inning. With one out, Harvey singled over second. On a hit and run play in which Currier hit safely to right field, he reached third, Currier going to second on the followed with the third hit in succession, sending both Harvey and Currier over the plate. MacLaughlin then drew a base on balls, but was left on second and Aronson on third.
In the last of the third the University team scored two more runs. Harvey started the inning with a base on balls. Currier hit to left on another hit and run play, in which Harvey reached third and Currier second. On Aronson's out to McCaffery, Currier drew a throw to second, allowing Harvey to come home. Currier scored immediately afterwards, however, when MacLaughlin hit safely to right field. MacLaughlin was thrown out in an attempted steal, and Dana ended the inning with a grounder to second.
Fordham came near scoring in the fifth. a. Scheiss hit to left centre for two bases and took third on a wide throw to second by Hartford. The next man field out to Dana, but Jackson was given his base on balls. Jackson tried to steal second but was out on Currier's perfect throw to Simons. Scheiss made no attempt to come home on the play, and was left on third when McCaffery sent a liner to Briggs. In the next inning Fordham's two runs were made. Gargan Struck out, but Coffey hit safely to centre field. Harvey juggled the ball, allowing the runner to reach second. Mahoney sent a fly to Harvey and Coffey ran for third after the catch. Lanigan failed to stop the throw and Coffey was safe at the plate on a close decision. With two out and the bases clear Egan hit for three bases. He came in a moment later on Hartford's wild pitch.
Harvard scored one run in the last half of the sixth. With two out, Briggs was given his base on balls. Simons hit to centre field, and Briggs came home from first owing to Egan's slowness in fielding the ball, Simons tried to reach third on the throw, but was out.
Brown, who took Harvey's place in centre field in the sixth, hit safely in the last of the seventh. Currier followed with his third hit of the game, placing Brown on third. Currier's attempt to draw a throw and allow Brown to score was unsuccessful as Brown was out at the plate. The University team added two more runs to the score in the eighth. MacLaughlin hit a three-bagger to left centre. Dana's grounder to second was fielded too late to catch MacLaughlin at the plate and Dana was safe at first. The latter stole second and took third on the catcher's high throw. Briggs sacrificed, scoring Dana.
