SECOND 1912 EIGHT WON

Outcome of Spectacular Contest Yesterday in Doubt Until Finish.

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

In one of the most exciting and spectacular races ever seen on the Charles River, the second Freshman crew finished first in the race for second class crews held yesterday over a mile and one-half course in the basin. The Sophomores were a length behind the second Freshman crew, and one-quarter of a length ahead of the third Freshman crew. The Seniors finished fourth, one-half-length behind the third Freshman eight, and three-quarters of a length ahead of the Juniors. The time of the second Freshman crew was 8 minutes, which is considered very good for a second class crew rowing over a mile and one-half course. At no point in the race before the finish did any crew have a decided advantage, and the race was in doubt to the very end.

At the start the Sophomores were placed next the wall on the Boston side, the second Freshman crew next, then the Seniors, Juniors, and the third Freshman crew in order. All the crews obtained a good start except the Seniors, who were not ready. After the first few strokes the second Freshman crew had a slight lead over the others, but half-way between the start and Harvard Bridge all the boats were absolutely even. Before reaching the bridge the second and third Freshman eights began to draw away a little, and as the crews swept under the arches, the third Freshman crew was a few feet ahead, with the second Freshman crew second, the Juniors third, and the Sophomores and Seniors in order.

At Hereford street the third Freshman crew had relinquished the lead to the second, and the Sophomores had moved up to third, putting the Juniors in fourth place. From here to the finish the second Freshman eight drew away, and the race developed into a struggle for second place between the Sophomores and the third Freshman eight, and for fourth, place between the Seniors and Juniors. The Sophomores were just able to win second place, and the Seniors passed the Juniors, when No. 5 in the latter boat caught a crab.

As a result of the race the second Freshman eight and the Sophomores will have the right to enter the class race today.
