The winter track carnival which will be held this afternoon, furnishes a typical example of the interest in scrub sports which is steadily increasing every year. Although the entry list is considerably smaller than last year's, the fact that nearly 200 men are taking part is a convincing proof of popularity. Since the plan was inaugurated two years ago, its success has ensured it a permanent place in the track season. The coaches are given an opportunity to see the relative advantages of all the candidates for the team, the monotony of the long winter season is broken, and a great many men are given an opportunity to take part in one of the most healthful branches of athletic sport. This year especially, when the prospects of a winning team are not particularly bright, the need for new material is very urgent, and if the winter carnival has aided in the development of the team besides affording exercise for some who would not otherwise engage in athletics, it has fully justified itself.
We hope that every man who competes today will continue his work during the spring. Coaches Donovan and Quinn will give every attention to new men from now to the end of May, and with proper support a good showing will be made in the intercollegiate contests.
