INTERCOLLEGIATE CHESS

Tournament Between Harvard, Yale, Princeton and Columbia Begins.

The fourteenth annual intercollegiate chess tournament between Harvard, Yale, Columbia and Princeton, will begin this afternoon and continue tomorrow and Saturday at the West Side Republican Club, Broadway and 83d street, New York. Harvard has won the championship for the past two years and has apparently every chance for a third successive victory. W. C. Cogswell '07 is the only man on the University team who did not play in the intercollegiate match last year.

The play each day will be from 1 to 6 P. M. Any matches remaining unfinished at 6 o'clock will be continued from 8 to 10 P. M. Any matches remaining unfinished at 6 o'clock will be continued from 8 to 10 P. M. The rate of play will be 15 moves an hour.

The schedule of playing is as follows:

Thursday, December 22--Harvard vs. Yale; Columbia vs. Princeton.

Friday, December 22--Harvard vs. Columbia; Yale vs. Princeton.

Saturday, December 23--Harvard vs. Princeton; Columbia vs. Yale.

The Harvard team, chosen as a result of a round, robin tournament, will play in the following order: P. W. Bridgman 2G., Q. A. Brackett '06, G. T. McClure '06, W. C. Cogswell '07, E. H. Gruening '07 is substitute.

The order of the other teams is as follows:

Yale--W. N. Woodbury, A. S. Jameson, H. W. Headley, E. B. Burgess.

Princeton--W. M. Ward, C. Williams, H. C. Greenland, R. Hinds.

Columbia--R. Schoeder, L. J. Wolff, O. Brown, H. Blumberg.

The intercollegiate cup will be held for one year by the winning team, every member of which will receive a silver medal. The men on the Harvard team, whether they win or lose, will be awarded medals through the fund recently established by Mr. A. C. White '02, a former vice-president of the University chess club.

Of the previous tournaments Harvard has won eight, Columbia four, and Yale one.
