PROMISING DEFENSIVE WORK

University Team Effective in Stopping Forward Passes and Kicks.

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

The scrimmage in yesterday afternoon's practice was, like that of Tuesday, devoted mainly to developing the defensive work of the first team. The second eleven was given the ball time after time in the first team's territory, once gaining the 5-yard line on a forward pass, but they were unable to gain although given several extra downs. On one occasion Nourse got the ball on a fumble and ran fifty yards for a touchdown. The first team linemen showed improvement on the defensive, and not only broke through the second line at will, but spoiled almost all attempts at forward passes and blocked several punts. The latter part of the scrimmage developed into an exchange of punts, with but few line-plays. Burr tried a goal from placement on the 52-yard line, but the kick failed and went to the second team on their 20-yard line.

The preliminary work consisted of breaking through for the linemen, and D. C. Campbell '02 gave the ends practice in going down on punts and not overrunning their man. C. D. Daly '01 and H. Foster, Jr., '07 coached the backfield. After the scrimmage the backs were given practice in catching punts, and Sprague got off some beautiful punts. Houston and Smith, who have been suffering from injuries, were in the signal practice but did not play in the scrimmage. The line-up: FIRST TEAM.  SECOND TEAM.
