The University baseball team was defeated by Bowdoin yesterday afternoon by a score of 5 to 4. Both teams played wretchedly and seven errors by Harvard and five by Bowdoin were largely responsible for the scoring. Slater was nervous in the box and Bowdoin had little trouble in finding him at the necessary time. Against an easy pitcher, the batting of the University team was woefully stupid. Currier and Slater each got two hits and Leonard made a two-bagger the only time he was at bat, but the ten other men who faced Sparks made only two hits among them.
Harvard was the first to score, McCall singled, stole second, took third on Briggs' hit, and scored on Currier's hit. Dexter and Simons went out in order and Briggs was caught at the plate on a quick return by Stanwood after Simons' out. Bowdoin scored three runs in the first of the sixth. With one out, Sparks was safe at first on Simons' error. G. Bower knocked a fly to left, Sparks reaching third and Bower second on Dexter's error. Manter knocked a grounder to Slater, who tried to get Sparks out between third and home. A wild throw by Pritchett, however, allowed him to score. McDade contributed a clean single, scoring Bower and Manter. Harvard tied the score in the second half of the same inning.
Each team scored one run in the eighth, and in the first of the ninth Bowdoin made the winning run on a hit, a sacrifice, and another single. Harvard had an excellent chance to tie the score in the last of the ninth. With one out, Waters got his base on balls. Then Leonard, batting for Pritchett, met the ball for a clean two-bagger. Waters should have scored, but was slow and only reached third. Easy grounders by Brennan and McCall ended the game.
