HARVARD 3; WILLIAMS, 2

Baseball Team Won Ten-Inning Game.--Departure of Team Today.

The University baseball team defeated Williams yesterday afternoon in a ten-inning game by the score of 3 to 2. It was only by an exciting batting rally in the tenth that Harvard gained a victory that should have been won earlier in the game. Except for that one inning it was a tedious game and devoid of interest. Harvey's running catch of a low fly in the third inning and the extraordinary umpiring were the only noteworthy incidents until that time.

When Williams came to bat in the extra inning, the score was 1 to 1, and no scoring had been done since the second inning. Templeton, who had taken Mahan's place in right field at the end of the sixth, started off with a single and was sacrificed to second by Osterhout. Ford hit the first ball pitched to deep left, scoring Templeton and reaching second before the ball could be returned. Young flied, out, leaving Williams one run ahead. Currier placed a hit over second and Pounds, batting in Brennan's place, knocked the ball over the centre fielder's head, scoring Currier, while he took third on the throw-in. Leonard beat out a bunt and stole second, and Ford became nervous and passed Briggs. With the bases full and none out, McCall singled to centre, scoring the winning run.

Six hits off Ford, and one of them a scratch hit, is by no means encouraging as a sign of the University team's batting ability. He was wild yesterday and passed six men in all; but when it came to scoring a man from second, no Harvard player seemed able to hit safely. More timely and consistent batting will be needed from now on to win games. The pitchers are all in first class condition and doing excellent work, but there must be batting if games are to be won.

Williams scored in the first inning. Young was hit by a pitched ball, took second on Waters sacrifice and went to third on Wadsworth's grounder and scored when Briggs dropped Leonard's throw. Warren was passed, but Wadsworth was caught out trying to steal third and Lewis struck out.

Dexter scored Harvard's first run in the second inning. He received a base on balls, stole second and went to third on a passed ball. Harvey hit past Harmon and Dexter scored. Harvey stole second and took third on Waters' error, but was caught trying to score on Currier's bunt, after Dana and been passed. Brennan grounded out, leaving two men on bases.
