HARVARD DEFEATED AMHERST

In Baseball by the Score of 2 to 0.--Brennan Pitched Good Game.

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

The University baseball team shut out Amherst yesterday afternoon on Soldiers Field by the score of 2 to 0. With the exception of Brennan's excellent pitching, there was little cause for encouragement in Harvard's game. The hitting, off a second rate pitcher, who lacked both speed and curves, was very weak, and with men on the bases was even worse. Three errors were made, none of which fortunately proved costly, but on the bases everything seemed to go wrong.

Brennan deserves the credit for the victory. At no time in the game did Amherst have a chance against his pitching. His speed and change of pace were excellent and his curves proved too much for the opposing batters. Captain Dexter's all-around work was faultless. In the field, his only chance was a hard drive by McClure in the sixth, close to the foul line, which he got after a long run. Each time at bat, he hit the ball squarely, getting a three-bagger the first time and being called out at first on an infield hit, which he apparently beat to the base. Currier caught Brennan well and secured two hits out of three times at bat.

The first score came in the second inning, when, after Dexter's three-base hit, Simons scored him with a single to left field. Harvard scored again in the fourth on errors. McCall went to third on Palmer's muff of Jube's throw, and after Dexter had gone out, scored on Palmer's second error, on which Simons reached first. He stole second but was left. Dana and Pritchett going out in order. Good chances to score were lost in the fifth and seventh innings by poor hitting. Currier opened the fifth with a two-bagger to centre, and after Brennan had filed out, took third, on Palmer's error on which Harvey got to first. Briggs went out, McClure to Palmer, and McCall fouled out. In the seventh, Currier singled with one out, and stole second, but was caught at third, trying a hit-and-run with Harvey, which the latter failed to hit.

Only two Amherst men reached second during the game. In the second inning, McClure secured the solitary hit off Brennan and went to second on a passed ball. The next two men struck out, and Michaels knocked a pop fly to McCall. In the fourth, with two men out, McClure knocked an easy grounder towards second, which went through McCall's legs. Simons threw poorly to Briggs on Henry's grounder, McClure taking second on the play. McCall ended the inning with a pretty catch of Danahey's fly over second.   HARVARD   a.b.  r.  b.h.  p.o.  a.  e.
