HARVARD SHUT OUT EXETER

Baseball Team Won One-Sided Game by Heavy Hitting and Opponent's Errors.

Exeter was shut out by the University baseball team yesterday afternoon at Exeter by the score of 16 to 0. With Slater in the box Harvard played good fast ball, while Exeter was woefully weak, both in the field and at the bat. White, Exeter's pitcher, was never given a chance to show what he could do as the fielders fumbled practically every other chance they had.

The University team had sixteen hits to their credit. It was the first real exhibition of batting the men have given and without the help of Exeter's wretched fielding, which contributed enough runs to win several games, they hit the ball hard enough to win. Captain Dexter, McCall, and Slater led the list with three safe hits apiece. Slater was too much for his opponents and was never in a tight place.

Harvard worked two double plays which spoiled Exeter's best chances. In the seventh Cooney led off with a single to right and stole second. Grattan flied to Harvey who threw to McCall, catching Cooney several feet from the base. The throw was wide, but McCall caught it with one hand. Again, in the ninth, with one out Vaughn was safe on Simon's error. Leddy followed with a single to right advancing Vaughn to second. Cooney hit to McCall, who threw to Simons, forcing Leddy, and the latter completed the double by retiring Cooney at first.

Howe substituted for Currier behind the bat and played a creditable game. He caught Slater well and made a pretty two-bagger in the sixth. McCall accepted all his chances without a mistake. In the eighth, Cooney attempted to steal, but Howe's throw was perfect and in spite of being knocked over by the baserunner, McCall held the ball and retired the man. Simons accepted seven of his eight chances without an error. The last one was a hard grounder which Leonard almost reached and which Simons juggled long enough for the man to reach the base.
