The Freshman baseball team won its first game of the season with Noble's School, yesterday afternoon by the score of 8 to 4. Although the opposing pitcher was not at all difficult, the hitting of the Freshmen showed a decided improvement over the form shown in practice. The best playing for the Freshmen was done by Jordan, who made a hit every time he was at bat, and accepted 16 chances without an error. Hall, Aronson, and Delano also showed up strongly, both at the bat and in the field.
The pitching of Hicks for the Freshmen, was excellent, after the first inning, when, with two out he forced in two runs by giving four bases on balls and hitting one man. In six innings, Hicks struck out 10 men, and allowed only two scattered hits. Boyer, who substituted for Hicks in the eighth inning, also pitched well, striking out three men, but allowing two bases, which, owing to errors, resulted in two runs.
Noble's scored twice in the first inning, on four bases on balls and a dead ball, but the Freshmen tied the score in their half, and forged ahead by four runs in the third. No more scoring was done by either team until the last of the eighth, when the Freshmen scored two earned runs. Noble's scored in the first of the ninth on two successive bases on balls and loose fielding by the Freshmen.
