REVIEW OF CREW WORK

University and 1910 Crews on River During Past Week.--Class Crew Orders.

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

Today the University and Freshman crews will report for the first time on a Saturday this season. Since these squads were called out, they have rowed only the first five days each week, but they will report at the regular times on Saturdays hereafter.

Last Monday the University crew went out on the river for the first time this spring, and the Freshmen went out for the first time on Wednesday. Yesterday afternoon the University crew used a shell for the first time since last fall; but the first and second Freshman and the second and third University crews were still confined to barges.

The University crew left the boathouse about 4.30 o'clock and, accompanied by Coach Wray in a single scull, paddled upstream about half a mile. Then they were forced to return to the boathouse for a fresh oar for Fish, because the button on the oar he started with became loose. On their second trip up-stream the men went about a half a mile again in easy stretches before turning. They rowed all eight most of the time and went along in fairly satisfactory style, despite the fact that they were in the 1905 shell, which was not rigged to suit the needs of the men individually. At stroke Morgan showed some improvement over his performances early in the week and Severance at number 7 seemed to have lengthened out his stroke somewhat. The men got fairly well together at times and the crew as a whole showed great promise. Richardson was still absent from his seat at 5, but was replaced by Faulkner.

The Freshman first crew was the first eight out on the river yesterday. Coached by Wray from his single scull, they rowed up-stream as far as the Brighton bridge and back to the University boathouse. On the way up-stream Forster and McLeod, who started out at stroke and 7 respectively, changed places. Most of the men are very crude as yet in their oarsmanship, but the crew is fairly heavy and well balanced. However, there will probably be a number of changes in it before any races are rowed.

Upperclass rowing commenced on Monday this week and the captains plan to get afloat early next week.
