SNAPPY WORK IN SCRIMMAGE

First Eleven Unable to Score on Second, but Play was Encouraging.

The University football team held a very snappy 25-minute scrimmage with the second eleven yesterday. Neither side scored, but the playing was fast and full of life throughout. The two teams were more evenly matched than in any previous scrimmage this fall. The University eleven was weakened by the Absence of the regular ends and of But and Parker in the line. C. Blagden '02, tackle on the 1901 eleven, and Coach Curtis played tackle and end respectively on the second team. Although playing only off and on, their work strengthened the second team's defense considerably. D. J. Hurley '05, captain of the University eleven in both 1904 and 1905, R. P. Kernan '03, and R. W. P. Brown "98 were also on the field and assisted in the coaching.

Newhall, at quarterback on the University team, used the forward, pass more frequently and more successfully than for some days. The onside kick was also tried a number of times by him and by Wendell, and the tendency of the backs was to play a very open game. Several new plays were tried out, the most successful being a quarterback run by Newhall on which he made some good gains. The ends and backs on both teams afforded excellent interference to the runner on end plays, and for that reason these plays were often used.

In the preliminary practice, Coach Cutts had the lineman working with the charging machine, which was used yesterday for the first time this year. Two squads, one composed of Fish, Nourse, Hoar, and Hadden, and the other of Inches, Brock, Forchheimer, Gilmore and Robinson, were alternately give defensive practice.

After the kickoff to the second, the latter punted after one play. Then the first, on the second's 30-yard line, tried on onside kick, which was blocked by Dore. Two tandem plays through tackle and a punt gave the first the ball again on their 45-yard line. Wendell, on a double pass, made an excellent onside kick, which was recovered on the second's 50-yard line by Fish. From there, by an end run, Wendell, with clever assistance from Newhall, made 25 yards. An intercepted onside kick gave the second the ball, and they punted out of danger.

Almost immediately Wendell came back with another run for 20 yards, and again the second got the ball on an intercepted forward pass, and punted. Newhall then worked his quarterback run for a 20-yard gain around right end and followed it by an onside kick, which Nourse recovered on the second's 15-yard line. Here the second held an punted to Newhall who rushed the ball back 25 yards. Wendell again worked an onside kick to Houston on the 20-yard line. Newhall tried a forward pass, which failed, the ball going behind the second's line for a touchback.

After the punt-out to the first team, Rand, on a tandem through left tackle, gained 20 yards on one play and five on the next. Newhall then threw a for- ward pass to Fish on the 5-yard line. A tandem was thrown back for a loss, and Newhall tried a pass to Wendell on the 4-yard line. A left-tackle plunge failed to gain, and on the subsequent forward pass, Davis fell on the ball behind the line for the second touchback, when time was called.
