COACHES WORK ON DEFENSE

Short Scrimmage Yesterday.--Several Regulars Laid Off.

There was a short, fast scrimmage between the University and second elevens yesterday afternoon in which the defense received particular attention. The ball was not put in play by kicking off, but was given to each team alternately near its opponent's goal line. The onside kick and forward pass were tried only a few times and with poor success. Line plays were resorted to almost exclusively and some good gains were made through the second's line with Wendell carrying the ball.

The University team's defensive work was given the most attention by the coaches, and in order to give them particular drill in this, the second was several times given the ball near the University's goal. The latter held well and the second, usually using their tandem formation, could not gain through the line. After each forward pass or onside kick the ball was brought back to its former position and given to the second again.

The second team was first given the ball on the University's 25-yard line, but in eleven downs could not gain the required 10--yard. The ball was then moved to the 10-yard line, and Coach Daly went in at quarterback on the second. Only seven yards were gained in as many downs this time. The University team was then given the ball on the second's 30-yard line, and the ball was gradually advanced towards the goal, Wendell scoring through centre. Some new formations were tried, but as a rule the linemen did not open up large enough holes for good gains. Coach Campbell paid especial attention to Browne, at right end on the University team. Browne broke up a number of plays and showed considerable improvement in securing kicks and forward passes.

In the preliminary work, the line was drilled in protecting Burr's punts. Occasionally the kicks were sent away before any of the second team could break through, but often they were nearly blocked. The ends ran down and tackled under the punts.

Several men were absent from practice. Macdonald, Bird, Brennan and W. Peirce were in uniform and ran several laps around the field, but did not take part in the scrimmage. Parker, Starr, and Apollonio were laid off altogether.

The teams lined up as follows: UNIVERSITY ELEVEN.  SECOND ELEVEN. M. C. Peirce, l.e.  r.e., Moore Burr, Hadden, l.t.  r.t., Comstock Brock, l.g.  r.g., Davis, Morris Grant, c.  c., Dore Hoar, r.g.  l.g., Ver Wiebe Fish, r.t.  l.t., M.
