On hearing that Foote, the Cornell stroke and captain, had left Ithaca last Saturday and might not be able to row on Friday, the University crew management telegraphed its willingness to postpone the race. Yesterday the following reply was received from the Cornell management: "Unnecessary to postpone race. Thanks for courtesy."
F. J. Bangs, Columbia '87, and Steward of the Poughkeepsie Regatta, will act as referee at the University crew race with Cornell on Friday. W. A. Meikleham of Columbia, for several years referee of the Harvard-Yale regattas and last year of the Harvard-Cornell race, was unable to serve this year on account of illness.
Owing to the rough water yesterday the University crew did not have a time trial, but took a harder row than on Monday. After paddling at an easy pace down stream to Longwood bridge the crew rowed to Harvard bridge in one stretch at a stroke of 30 and 34. Despite a cross wind tending to make the boat rock, the boat went more smoothly than yesterday, as the men showed evener form at the finish of the stroke and seemed to drive the boat without effort.
Second and Freshman Crews.
The Freshman crew went out on the river yesterday with J. Cutler back at stroke. He has not rowed for five days, and yesterday showed good form but lack of vigor. The crew as a whole showed a tendency to hang at the catch, but in several brushes of about 30 strokes with the University second crew the boat spaced well. This morning these two crews will hold their last practice in Cambridge in the shells in which they will row in the Henley Regatta on Saturday. The shells will be sent off this afternoon, and tomorrow the men will probably be given individual coaching in pair-oars. The men will leave Cambridge tomorrow afternoon.
The orders of the crews at Philadelphia will probably be the same as they were yesterday:
University second crew--Stroke, Morgan; 7, Corlett; 6, Swaim; 5, Emmons; 4, Richards; 3, Tilton; 2, Mason; bow, Gill; cox., Arnold.
Freshman crew--Stroke, J. Cutler; 7, Rackemann; 6, Lunt; 5, Faulkner; 4, Mulligan; 3, Severance; 2, Crandall; bow, Ellis; cox., Wise.
