University Baseball Team Won Encouraging Game.--Errorless Fielding.

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

Yesterday afternoon the University baseball team defeated the Lafayette nine by a score of 7 to 1.

The game was by far the most encouraging played in Cambridge this year, for although the teams secured but five hits each, the Harvard players usually met the ball squarely, and but three men struck out. Leonard secured a three-base hit, and Harvey a two-base hit, the latter scoring three men. In the field the team played an errorless game. Lafayette's only run was forced by Hartford, who lost control in the eighth inning, and passed four of the seven men who faced him. Up to that time he pitched a fair game, striking out eight men and allowing five scattered singles. The team was without exception fast on the bases. Stephenson especially showed improvement in this respect. Clarkson's poor decisions on the bases were demoralizing to both teams.

McCall made the finest play of the game by stopping Moore's fast grounder to right. Leonard made the longest hit of the game and ran bases with his usual dash. Harvey also secured a long hit, and accepted all his chances. Currier played a lively game on bases and in the field.

The University team scored its first run in the first on Dexter's long fly, after Leonard had received a base on balls and gone to third on Stephenson's hit. Newberry gave Leonard another base in the third, Dexter was safe on an attempted put out at second, and Hellmann was hit by a pitched ball. McCall received his base, forcing a run, and Harvey followed with a two-bagger that brought in Dexter, Hellmann and McCall.

Two more runs were added in the sixth on a single by Currier and a three-bagger by Leonard, who scored on the catcher's error.
