FOOTBALL NEXT AUTUMN

At a stated meeting of the Board of Overseers yesterday, it was voted to allow football to be played until December 1, 1906, under the new rules, and upon such terms as the Committee on the Regulation of Athletic Sports consider advisable in order to test the propriety of continuing intercollegiate football. It was also voted that no intercollegiate games scheduled for a date after December 1 should be sanctioned by the Committee of Athletic Sports, and that a committee should be appointed to consider a report upon the whole subject of the regulations of athletic sports, and render a report thereon as soon as possible.

At the meeting of the Overseers, Mr. M. Williams presented the report of the Committee on Physical Training, Athletic Sports and Sanitary Condition of all Buildings in relation to the game of football, with the recommendation that the following vote be adopted by the Board:

"Voted: That the Committee on the Regulation of Athletic Sports be authorized to permit, during the season of 1906, but not later than December 1, 1906, games of intercollegiate football, under the new rules, upon such terms and conditions as said Committee on the Regulation of Athletic Sports shall consider advisable in order to test the propriety of continuing intercollegiate football, and that a copy of this vote be sent to the President and Fellows."

After debate thereon, and upon the request of President Eliot, the vote was taken by yeas and nays, and was adopted by 15 votes in the affirmative to 9 votes in the negative, as follows:

President Eliot presented the vote of the President and Fellows of last Monday: "That the Committee on the Regulation of Athletic Sports be directed to sanction no apointments for intercollegiate contests for dates later than December 1, 1906."

The Board of Overseers thereupon voted by 17 votes in the affirmative and 6 in the negative to consent to this vote.

President Eliot then presented a second vote of the President and Fellows of last Monday: "That a committee of three members of the Corporation be appointed to consider a report upon the whole subject of the regulation of athletic sports, and that this vote be communicated to the Board of Overseers with the request that they also appoint a committee for the same purpose; the committee so appointed to be a joint committee and to report as promptly as may be convenient." This vote was also consented to by the Board of Overseers.

The Board then adopted the following vote:

"That in the opinion of this Board, many of the unsatisfactory conditions attending intercollegiate football has been exaggerated by an unwillingness on the part of the officials charged with the enforcement of the rules on the field to assert their authority, and therefore this Board requests the Committee on the Regulation of Athletic Sports to formulate if possible some more satisfactory plan for the selection of such officials than the one now in vogue.
