Second Trial Eight Won Close Race

Under the most unfavorable weather conditions a race was held yesterday afternoon between the two trial eights of the University crew squad over the one and seven-eights mile course in the basin, starting from Longwood bridge and finishing at the Union Boat Club. The second crew, composed of last year's Freshman eight, won by six feet, in an exciting finish. Although rowing a lower stroke most of the way, the winning boat was always within striking distance, and at the very finish, spurted to gain the lead. Farley's boat, composed of last year's substitutes, maintained a 34 stroke most of the way, but at the finish were unable to raise it effectively. Both crews shipped a great deal of water which perceptibly reduced the speed. The time of the winning crew was 10 minutes, 7 seconds.

Farley's crew caught the water first and within the first 200 yards gained a lead of one-half a length which they maintained until Harvard bridge was reached. On the other side of the bridge the second crew pulled up and the boats were even until within 100 yards of the finish. Here 1909 Freshman crew forged ahead with a well-timed spurt and won the race.
