SECRET PRACTICE YESTERDAY

Regular Team Had Light Work.--Substitutes Scored Twice on Second.

In the football practice yesterday afternoon, which was entirely secret, the men who played in the Brown game last Saturday were worked very lightly, Lockwood and Wendell being given a day's rest. The University team substitutes and the second team had a 20-minute scrimmage in which the first eleven scored two touchdowns. The first was made by straight rushing, the second on a fumble by Graydon on Hall's attempted drop kick for the first team, Nourse falling on the ball over the line. Starr kicked both the goals from touchdowns. White was tried at right halfback in the scrimmage and played a very creditable game. Peirce played exceptionally well in the line, and several times broke through to stop plays or get the ball on fumbles.

Before the scrimmage the backs were given a chance at tackling in the open field, and the linemen, under the direction of Coach Cutts, had a short practice in blocking. All the available ends were coached in running down under punts, Coach Reid and Gray doing the kicking. While the second eleven was running through signals, the first team lined up against the substitutes for practice in rushing the ball through the line. Purr and Parker, who has recovered from the injury to his shoulder, kicked a large number of goals from placement, under the direction of Coach Reid.

On the first play after the kick-off Hall punted to Gilder on the second team's 40-yard line. Nourse blocked Graydon's punt and downed the ball for the first eleven on the 28-yard line. After a short loss on a quarterback run, Peirce gained 12 yards on a fumbled forward pass. A penalty for holding followed on the first team and one for offside play on the second team. The second eleven secured the ball on an onside kick on its 17-yard line, and Graydon at once punted, Rand running the ball back 25 yards to the 25-yard line. From this point the team rushed the ball over the line, Gray scoring the touchdown.

After the kick-off, the first eleven carried the ball by steady gains to the second team's 20-yard line, where Hall tried a drop kick. The ball went to one side and Graydon fumbled the catch, which enabled Nourse to down the ball over the goal line for the second and last touchdown.

The line-up for the scrimmage follows: FIRST ELEVEN.  SECOND ELEVEN. Harding, l.e.  r.e., Browne Warren, l.t.  r.t., Gilbert Gilmore, l.g.  r.g., Brock Nourse, c.  c., Irving Robinson, r.g.  l.g., Alley, Burns Peirce, r.t.  l.t., Comstock Bird, r.e.  l.e., Kelley Hall, q.b.  q.b., Gilder, Cate Rand, l.h.  r.h., Greenebaum White, r.h.  I.h., Graydon Gray, f.b.  f.b., Hoffman
