Charles Eliot Norton Fellowship

Applications for permission to compete for the Charles Eliot Norton Fellowship in Greek studies, for the year 1907-08, must be made to Professor A. A. Howard, chairman of the Department of Classics, before December 1, 1906.

Competition for this fellowship, the annual income of which is $600, is open to all members of the Senior class and of the Graduate School, both of the University and of Radcliffe College. The award will be made on the basis of the thesis and of such other evidences of scholarship as may be obtainable. In case the theses presented are not of sufficient merit, no award will be made.

With the consent of the committee candidates may write on other classical subjects than those proposed in the following list:

1. The Greek epigram in literature and inscriptions to the end of the classical age.

2. The dramatic art of Euripides.

3. Virgil's originality, with especial reference to his indebtedness to the Greek poets.

4. The evidence in Aristotle's writing of a belief in a personal immortality of the soul.

5. The relation of the Greek Ceramic artists to the great masters of painting.

6. The Greek conception of liberty and democracy, compared with the modern.

The right is reserved to the editors of the Harvard Studies in Classical Philology to publish the thesis of the successful candidate. The incumbent of the fellowship must agree to pursue his studies for the year of the incumbency at the American School of Classical Studies at Athens.
