In the first division of the graded crew races, which were rowed yesterday afternoon, the First Newell crew won an exciting race from the First Weld by six feet. One length of open water behind the winners came the Second Newell, which was four lengths ahead of the Second Weld. In the second division, the Third Weld defeated the Third Newell by four lengths of open water. Both races were rowed downstream over the one and seven-eighths mile course in the basin, from the Longwood bridge to the Union Boat Club.
The Races in Detail.
The start of the first division was made at 3.50 o'clock with the four boats close to the Boston side. First Weld caught the water first, and, rowing a faster stroke than the others, drew quickly ahead. Scarcely 100 yards had been covered when number four in First Newell lost control of his oar for several strokes. After this accident the crew got together well and rowed an excellent race. Although still behind First Weld at Harvard bridge, they were rowing strongly, and when they were through the bridge they pulled up gradually on the leaders and forged ahead at the finish with a well-timed spurt. Second Newell was always within striking distance, but seemed to lack the physical power to go any faster. Unsteadiness caused the Second Weld boat to fall behind from the very start and it was never an important factor in the race.
The second division race was started at 4.25 o'clock. Third Weld caught the water first and pulled steadily ahead. But for the tactics of their coxswain, who persisted in steering his boat towards the Cambridge shore, the margin at the finish would have been greater. Third Newell was very crude in form and failed entirely to swing together.
As a result of the races the following eleven men will be asked to join the University crew squad in the spring: L. H. Butt '08, E. C. Cutler '09, S. A. Fahnestock '08, H. P. Forte '07, E. F. Hanfstaengl '09, H. W. Hyde '08, R. S. Lovering '08, J. Lowell '08, J. V. Onativia '08, C. E. Tilton '08 and J. S. Whitney '08.
The members of the First Newell crew have been awarded the insignia of their boat club.
