PRACTICE VERY SPIRITED

Three Touchdowns Scored in 20-Minute Scrimmage.--Defense Tested.

Football practice yesterday afternoon was very spirited, the University eleven scoring three touchdowns on the second team in a 20-minute scrimmage. Later there was another 20-minute scrimmage, part of which was devoted to trying out the defensive strength of the first team. The work in the second period of play was not so good as in the first, neither side being able to score, although the University team backs rushed the ball extremely well; Lockwood, in particular, who made two 20-yard gains in succession on end plays. The feature of the first half was Wendell's 92-yard run for a touchdown on the second kick-off, aided by splendid interference from Kersburg and Warren. The weather was too cold and raw for first class work. Captain Foster turned his ankle slightly, but will probably be all right in a day or two. Mason played at fullback for some time, and Robinson was tried at end.

Before the scrimmage three teams, formed from the University squad had signal practice, which consisted of work on the forward pass, the onside kick, and a few of the newest plays. Foster tried several goals from placement behind the line of scrimmage which worked well in spite of the strong wind.

Burr kicked off to Graydon, who ran back 10 yards to the 30-yard line. After gaining one first down, the second eleven lost the ball on a fumble on their 30-yard line. Foster made four yards through right tackle, after which he was replaced by Rand. By steady gains Lockwood, Wendell, and Rand carried the ball to the five-yard line, from which point Lockwood went around left end for the first touchdown. Burr kicked the goal.

Wendell scored the second touchdown at once. He caught O'Hare's kick-off on his 18-yard line and ran 92 yards to the second eleven's goal line. Burr kicked the goal.

Howes caught Burr's kick-off on his 20-yard line. As the second team failed to gain Graydon punted, Newhall downing the ball for the University eleven in the middle of the field. In two plays the team carried the ball to the 20-yard line, Wendell making 25 yards through centre, and Macdonald 10 more on a forward pass. After a few short gains Wendell, who was given the ball on the 15-yard line, rushed it through centre for the third and last touchdown. The ball was not caught on Newhall's punt-out.

The line-up for the scrimmage follows: FIRST ELEVEN.  SECOND ELEVEN.
