LIGHT SECRET PRACTICE

For University Eleven.--Substitutes Made Three Scores Against Second.

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

On account of the hard game last Saturday the University eleven was worked very lightly in the secret practice yesterday afternoon, but the first team substitutes and the second team had a 20-minute scrimmage in which the substitutes made three touchdowns on the second. The forward pass and the onside kick hardly ever failed to give the ball to the first eleven, and these plays were used several times with great success. The weather was cool and bracing and there was considerable snap in the playing.

The preliminary work consisted of a half-hour's signal practice for the first eleven which was devoted to work on some new plays. The guards, under Coach Marshall, and the tackles, under O. F. Cutts L.'02, who has been appointed a coach for the rest of the season, were given practice in their positions. Newhall, Hall, Starr, and Taylor practiced drop kicking for some time, while Foster, Burr, and Kennard punted to the half backs in order to give the ends experience in running down under the ball. The ends and backs had a long practice in picking up the ball on onside kicks. Mason and Macdonald were again in the practice and Apollonio was out watching the work in his football clothes. Parker, who received a slight injury to his shoulder a few days ago, will probably be able to play by the end of the week, but Miller and Burnham, who were slightly injured in the West Point game, will be laid up for some time. In the scrimmage Starr kicked a goal after the first touchdown but no attempt was made to kick the second and third. The line-up of the University team for the signal practice follows: Kennard, l.e.; Osborne, l.t.; Burr, l.g.; Fraser, c.; Kersburg, r.g.; Peirce, r.t.; Macdonald, r.e.; Newhall, q.b.; Foster, l.h.; Lincoln, r.h.; Mason, f.t.

Lockwood kicked off to Cate who ran the ball back 25 yards to the 40-yard line. In the next play but one Hopewell secured the ball for the first eleven on a forward pass made by Cate and ran 40 yards for a touchdown. Blanchard kicked off to Peirce who downed the ball on the 40-yard line. The first team lost the ball on an onside kick, but regained it on the next play on a forward pass. After a 10-yard quarterback run by Newhall, Lockwood made the second touchdown, running 20 yards to the goal line. Lockwood scored the third and last touchdown after about eight minutes of play. In this third attempt to score the first eleven showed a great improvement in offensive work, one onside kick netting 15 yards for Macdonald.

The line-up for the scrimmage: FIRST ELEVEN.  SECOND ELEVEN. Hopewell, l.e.  r.e., Kelley, Browne Hoar, l.t.  r.t., Burns Gilmore, l.g.  r.g., Brock Nourse, c.  c., Dore Warren, r.g.  l.g., Blanchard Peirce, r.t.  l.t., Gilbert Macdonald, r.e.  l.e., Appleton, Moore Starr, q.b.  q.b., Cate Rand, l.h.  r.h., Howes Lockwood, r.h.  l.h., Graydon Gray, f.b.  f.b., White
