HARVARD, 44; SPRINGFIELD, 0

Open Game, Marked by Sensational Plays by University Team.

Saturday afternoon the University football eleven defeated the Springfield Training School in the Stadium by a score of 44 to 0. In spite of the heavy rain which fell throughout the game, and the consequent soft condition of the field and the slipperiness of the ball, the University team played a more open game than at any time this season, and managed the forward pass and the onside kick with great accuracy. Harvard was not hampered by frequent fumbling, as was the Yale team 10 days previously, when it beat Springfield, 12 to 0. This was the first game in which the new rules were much in evidence on Soldiers Field.

Sensational plays contributed largely to the size of the score. Early in the game Osborne blocked a kick on the opponents' 17 yard line, and Wendell scored. Again in the first half Newhall, with Burr as interference, ran 85 yards down the side-line through several of the opposing team for a touchdown. In this play he was aided by Springfield's ignorance of the fact that the ball is not dead when the umpire blows his horn. Again in the second half Foster punted from position on his 25-yard line, and Osborne, aided by Orr's blocking-off, secured the ball and ran for a touchdown.

Springfield was strongest in the centre of the line, and Harvard's attack was therefore directed farther out. Foster made 42 yards outside tackle, and Lincoln, through the same hole, went 26 yards to the goal line.

The defence was more powerful than heretofore, Springfield gaining first down but three times, all on fake plays which were successful only the first time tried. The visiting team invariably attempted to rush the ball, relying chiefly upon Honhardt.

Individually, Orr showed great improvement at end, and Miller at the other end made several good tackles. Fraser covered his position well, but his passing especially for punts, was poor.

Wright kicked off to Burr who ran the ball in from the 5 to the 32-yard line. Wendell gained 5 yards, but fumbled when tackled, and Bailey secured the ball on the 42-yard line. After three downs the ball went back to Harvard on the 33-yard line. An exchange of kicks and a rush or two carried the ball to Springfield's 36-yard line but the ball was lost on downs on the 11-yard line. On a fake Honhardt gained 13 yards through the left side of the line. Harvard held twice, and Osborne blocked Honhardt's punt. Wendell picked up the ball and scored. Burr kicked the goal.

Miller received Wright's kickoff on the 20-yard line and advanced 10 yards. Wendell made nine yards. Burr tried to punt, but had to fall on Fraser's low pass with a loss of 11 yards. Foster kicked from position to Correll on his own 45-yard line. Springfield, after a short gain, punted to Newhall, who ran 85 yards for a touchdown. Burr kicked the goal.

Osborne ran the kickoff from the 8 to the 30-yard line. Lockwood circled the end for 18 yards. Foster made an onside kick, Orr recovered the ball and ran 19 yards to the 18-yard line. Wendell made three rushes, and Lockwood scored through left tackle. Burr missed the goal. Time was called almost immediately.

In the second half Burr kicked off to Allen, who ran back from the two to the 22-yard line. Springfield punted to Miller, who made 10 yards to the 25-yard line. Newhall followed this with a clever run to the 1-yard line, and Wendell made the touchdown through centre. Burr failed to kick the goal.

Osborne ran Wright's kickoff in 15 yards from the 10-yard line, and on the next play Osborne scored from an onside kick by Foster. Burr kicked the goal.

After Burr had carried back the kickoff from the 13 to the 37-yard line, he was replaced by Gilmore. Foster tried right tackle for eight yards, Wendell made ten more, and Foster tried an onside kick. Fleming secured the ball on Springfield's 30-yard line. Honhardt gained first down on one play, and then punted to Foster, who advanced from the 35 to the 47-yard line. Newhall started a quarter back run, and when tackled passed to Lockwood, who made 12 yards. After several exchanges Foster gained 42 yards through right tackle, but Springfield held for downs on the 17-yard line, and then punted to Newhall, who ran to the 35-yard line. Lincoln took Foster's place and made five yards. After a forward pass Harvard recovered the ball on the 12-yard line. Wendell took the ball twice, and was pulled across the line by Kersburg. Wendell missed the goal. He was replaced by Gray, and Warren went in for Kersburg.

Newhall ran the kickoff back from the 17 to the 50-yard line, where he fumbled when tackled, but Kennard fell on the ball on Springfield's 43-yard line. Hall went in for Newhall. The ball was rushed to the 11-yard line, where Springfield held for downs. Hall caught Honhardt's punt on the 26-yard line, and Lincoln on the next play scored outside tackle. Hall missed the goal.

Tweed made the last touchdown through tackle, after the ball had been carried the length of the field on clever passes and kicks. Hall missed the goal. Time was called shortly after.
