The University basketball team defeated Cornell in the Gymnasium last evening, in a fast and interesting game, by a score of 26 to 10. In all departments of the game the University team showed great improvement over the work of last Saturday. The team work was good, and the shooting very accurate, but the men still had a tendency to dribble out of bounds, or to pass wildly. Both teams committed an inexcusably large number of fouls, and on the free throws thus given Captain Griffith showed the effects of the week's practice. On the defensive the Harvard team was strong, especially in the first half, when Cornell was unable to work any effective formations, and only scored on long running shots. In breaking away the University team was very strong, but lost many chances by not passing at the opportune moment, and by failure to watch the ball.
Harvard scored almost immediately, and soon afterward Cornell tied the score. By fast play and good shooting, the University team then took the lead, which it held until the end of the game. Captain Griffith and Amberg worked several effective formations from the toss-up, and by fast work on the floor continually gained the advantage. The score at the end of the first half was Harvard, 11; Cornell, 4.
Cornell started the second half aggressively, and took advantage of the University team's slackening of play. The Harvard team soon found itself again, however, and several baskets followed in quick succession. Near the end of the game Broun struck his head against the wall, and was replaced by Brooks who played a fast and steady game.
The Summary: Score-Harvard, 26; Cornell, 10. Baskets from floor--Amberg 5, Broun 2, Quigley, Brooks, griffiths, Root 2, Goodwin. Baskets on fouls--Griffiths 6, Lyford 2, Dickerman 2.
