Yesterday afternoon, at Providence, the University baseball team was defeated by Brown in a disappointing game by the close score of 2 to 1.
Harvard lost through inability to hit safely and at critical moments. In the ninth inning, with only one out, a man on second, and one run needed to tie the score, one batter struck out, and the next hit a grounder to the pitcher. With the exception of an error by Kernan that resulted indirectly in a run for Brown, and a poor catch by Randall, the fielding of the University team was good. Kemble's stop of a line hit in the second inning, and a well executed double play by Leonard, Randall, and Matthews, were features of the game. Castle pitched well, though not brilliantly. He had only one strikeout, but barring the fifth inning, when both the opposing team's runs were made, kept the hits well scattered. Coburn, who replaced him for the last two innings, allowed only one man to reach second base.
Brown made both its runs in the fifth inning. Dickison hit safely and got to second on an error by Randall. Thomas was hit by Castle. Sweeney then made a scratch hit, bringing in Dickinson and advancing Thomas, who scored when Kernan fumbled Jones' fly. In the ninth inning for Harvard, Randall got his base on balls, went to third on Leonard's timely hit, and scored on Matthews' out.
The score:
