ENCOURAGING DEFENSE

Second Stopped Nine Times on 3-Yard Line.--Wendell's Long Runs.

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

The most encouraging feature of yesterday's football practice was the defensive strength shown by the first team after the ball had been given to the second eleven on the 15-yard line. Five yards for offside play, and a 7-yard gain by Heilborn through Fultz carried the ball to the 3-yard line. The first eleven then held for nine more downs and was finally given the ball after it had forced the second back to the 10-yard line. A touchdown was scored by the first team in two plays. Wendell received the kickoff on the 10-yard line and ran back to the centre of the field. On the next play he went straight through tackle on his own side of the line and carried the ball down the field for a touchdown. White kicked the goal. The second eleven was then given the ball on the 15-yard line, but after 10 plays had only advanced the ball five yards. The first team took the ball and Wendell gained five yards around right end. Foster made a poor kick to the 27-yard line. The second team made first down on a free fumble, which C. Blagden recovered, but lost the ball on another fumble. Foster punted to the 50-yard line, when time was called. The time of play was 12 minutes.

Before the scrimmage there was a long practice in blocking and breaking through on punts. The defensive team was under a disadvantage as the opposing team could devote its entire attention to breaking through, instead of being forced to watch for fake kicks. Brill and Leonard did the kicking and Leonard's punts had good form and distance. White's passing for the punts was unsteady. After the scrimmage the backs were given work in starting and the linemen tried picking up the ball on the run.

D. W. Knowlton '03, who played tackle in 1902 and 1903, has entered the Law School, and is a candidate for the team.
