SATISFACTORY PRACTICE

Determined Work by Both Teams. Further Changes in the Line-up.

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

The practice of the University football squad yesterday afternoon, despite the heavy rain, which caused some fumbling, was a good exhibition of determined playing. Derby, who has been out of the game for the past week with an injured shoulder, reported again, but did not engage in the scrimmage.

The line men, in their work of breaking through and blocking, were coached by F. D. Cochrane '99, who gave special instruction to Squires. The work of Brill in this line practice was especially noticeable.

The scrimmage consisted of about forty rushes, with a short rest at the end of each successive ten rushes. The playing time amounted to about a fifteen minute half. The line-up of the first team was again changed, White going from the second to right guard on the first, and I wood replacing Blagden at left end. McFadon was shifted from right to left guard on the first, in place of Wilder, who was not in the line-up. During the scrimmage the second team carried the ball by straight line rushing twice the distance secured by the first. Each team was held for downs, and each secured the ball on a fumble. The first gained the ball once on a blocked punt, and once the ball was given to them when the second had made 20 yards by straight plays through the line. The playing of Hanley and Means in the back field of the second was good, the former once breaking through left guard for a gain of 15 yards. Noyes and Kernan both tried a quarterback run but failed to make any gain.

During the last few minutes of play Shurtleff replaced Montgomery at right end on the first, and C. R. D. Meier took Shurtleff's place at right end on the second. Time was called with the ball in the centre of the field, neither side having scored.

The line-up: FIRST ELEVEN.  SECOND ELEVEN. Lockwood, l.e. Lockwood, l.e.  r.e., Shurtleff, C. R. Meier Brill, l.t.  r.t., Oveson McFadon, l.g.  r.g., Sibley Cunniff, c.  c., Parker White, r.g.  l.g., Pell Squires, r.t.  l.t., Carr Montgomery, Shurtleff, r.e.  l.e., Blagden Noyes, q.b.  q.b., Kernan Hurley, r.h.  l.h., Foster Nichols, l.h.  r.h., Means Mills, f.b.  f.b. Hanley

H. D. Kernan '05, who is playing quarter-back on the second eleven, has been taken to the University training table. J. Parkinson '06, regular centre on last year's team has returned to college and will report for practice next Monday afternoon.
