DARTMOUTH DEFEATED

The University nine defeated Dartmouth yesterday afternoon in a well played and exciting game by a score of 4 to 1.

The game was to a great extent a pitchers' battle between Glaze and Coburn, in which Coburn had the advantage, as he allowed only four hits and one base on balls and struck out ten men. Glaze, on the other hand, allowed five hits and struck out six men, giving five bases on balls, three of which finally resulted in runs. He weakened decidedly in the eighth inning, giving three bases on balls and allowing two hits, thus enabling Harvard to score three runs. The fielding on both sides was sharp and fast. The University team played an errorless game and seemed to have a confidence and steadiness which have been lacking up to this time. In base running the team also did well, making a total of nine stolen bases. The fact that six men were left on bases was due to weak batting. Although the batting was weak and the hits few and scattered, the game as a whole was encouraging in that it gave evidence of alertness and team-play not shown in either the Bates or Williams games. Kernan who was tried at second base accepted several difficult chances.

Harvard scored the first run of the game in the fourth inning. Stephenson was given his base, stole second, went to third on Clarkson's grounder to shortstop, and scored on Matthews' single over second base. In the next inning, Keady made a single, stole second, took third on Stephenson's passed ball, and scored Dartmouth's only run on Reeve's hit. No more runs were made until the eighth inning, when with two men out Harvard scored three runs. Kernan was given his base and stole second, going to third on a passed ball by McCabe. Stephenson was also given his base and both men were brought in by Clarkson's two-base hit to deep center field. Clarkson then scored the last run of the game on Matthews' single between center and right field.
