THE WEEK IN BASEBALL

Practice Game Yesterday.--First Regular Game with Trinity on Monday.

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

University baseball practice has been held during the past week on a temporary diamond west of the Locker Building. The work has been the usual batting, fielding and battery practice and two scrub games, the second of which was played yesterday afternoon. In seven innings the first team defeated the second team by a score of 7 runs to 2. The play on both sides was extremely listless, owing to the cold weather, which has retarded the work all through the week. During the first part of the game the pitchers showed fair speed and control but the batting was poor. Throughout the game the base-running was discouraging, as the men watched the ball instead of running hard. In fielding, the work was good at times, but on the whole uncertain. The most encouraging feature of the game was the throwing which was fairly accurate, although the men are still slow in getting the ball off.

The team will play its first game of the season with Trinity on Monday on the temporary diamond. The work of removing the old cinder track and filling and leveling the new diamond, which is to be ready for use by the end of the spring recess, has been begun but is not yet far advanced. There will be regular practice this afternoon.

The batting order yesterday was as follows: Team A.  Team B. Carr, 3b.  2b., Murphy, Fischel Kernan, r.f.  c.f., Spencer Randall, 1b.  1b., Nichols Clarkson, Colby, c.f.  s.s., Matthews Stephenson, Mason, c.  c., Quigley, Hamlen H. V. Greenough, s.s.  l.f., Marshall, Nesmith Bolton, 2b.  r.f., C. P. Greenough, Sperry Castle, Coburn, p.  3b., Gardner Newhall, l.f.  p., Jackson, Tuckerman
